The Blue Dot: a Post-Representational Reading of Google Maps
Join us for Joost Grootens' LUCDH lunchtime talk Thursday, 27 May, 12:00 – 13:00 via Kaltura Live Rooms.
In his 2020 PhD research 'Blind Maps and Blue Dots', ACPA assistant professor Joost Grootens investigated the blurring of the producer-user divide in contemporary mapmaking practices of technology companies and amateurs. In this lecture, Grootens will focus on Google Maps, the world's most used map, and connect different modes of cartographic thinking to how Google Maps looks and functions as a graphic product.
Joost Grootens is a graphic designer of books and maps, head of the master programme Information Design at Design Academy Eindhoven, and assistant professor at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) of Leiden University.
