Webinar about Corona research at the LUMC
The Corona virus has been in our lives for almost a year now, and it will be there for much longer. Because the virus still has such a great impact on our daily lives, the Young Alumni Network of Leiden University decided to organise a webinar about the status of the corona research and the vaccine in collaboration with the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC).
Natacha Ogando is giving an online webinar on Friday 12 March at 16.00 hrs. During this webinar she will talk about how the virus work, what happens when the virus enters your body and how it spreads. She will also talk about the vaccines against Corona. How do the researchers build a working vaccine? How do you know that a certain vaccine works on this kind of virus and will it also protect us from the new covid variants?
In March Leiden University started the #WakeuptoCorona fundraising. Natacha will talk about what kind of research is conducted with the donations and in what way the donations enable the LUMC to do research in a different or faster way.

About Natacha Ogando
Natacha Ogando is completing her Ph.D. research project at LUMC, which was a partner institution in the MSCA ITN project ANTIVIRALS. Her research has been focused on the quest for broad-spectrum coronavirus inhibitors. Since the emerge of MERS-CoV and with the on-going pandemic SARS-CoV-2, this search has been a priority worldwide due to the limited number of not very effective therapeutic solutions available. Therefore, a part of Natacha’s job is to test different compounds to evaluate their inhibitory effect against different coronaviruses. Most of her work is performed in a biosafety level 3 laboratory. Moreover, Natacha is working together with other departments in the same hospital: her aims are to contribute to patient care and to understand better how coronaviruses replicate by characterizing important viral components.
Outside of the lab, Natacha gets involved in outreach events that promote science near the community. She likes to explore nature by doing long walks alone or in good company. Besides, she listens to rock music (a true Foo Fighters fan) and dances as much as she can. Her motto is “Keep moving forward (…)!” as once Walt Disney said.
