The state of conservation of the papyri found in the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum, which were carbonized and highly damaged by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, requires careful study of several material aspects in order to achieve a virtual reconstruction of the original scrolls, which at present are divided in many different fragments. This often results in the recovery of larger or continuous or totally new portions of text and of wider contexts for the preserved fragments. The case presented will concern Philodemus’ On rhetoric book 1, with particular focus on some columns in which Plato’s dialogue Gorgias can be identified as a literary hypotext used by the author. Attention will also be given to the contextualization of Philodemus’ rhetorical theory in the late Republican period.
