The Department of Art History Leiden cordially invites you to the Online Museum Talk of Alexander Dencher, junior curator of decorative arts at the Rijksmuseum and lecturer at Leiden University.

This talk examines the ways in which the display and study of furniture in museums may be expanded by looking at recent activities undertaken by the furniture department of the Rijksmuseum. The presentation will first focus on the creation of furniture study galleries at the new off-site storage facility in Amersfoort, which will hopefully allow students and specialists to closely examine aspects of technique, decoration and function. The second part of the lecture considers how drawings of furniture may help expand the traditional boundaries of the field of study by linking physical objects to the conceptual process of design.
