MISDOOM is a multidisciplinary international symposium that brings together researchers and practitioners from communication science, media studies, computer science, data science, as well as journalists and online media professionals to discuss current topics, technical advances and societal challenges in the area of online media. The symposium has a strong multidisciplinary character and aims to cater to the habits of different disciplines.
Invited talks
The MISDOOM symposium traditionally features invited speakers from both academia and journalism.
Edda Humprecht (University of Zürich)
Talk title: Unequal framework conditions? Lessons from comparative research on online disinformation
Edda Humprecht is a Senior Research and Teaching Associate in the Department of Mass Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich. In her research, she focuses on the content, use and effects of political communication, in particular, social media and digital media. Currently, she leads a project on online disinformation in comparative perspective.
Susan Banducci (University of Exeter, United Kingdom)
Talk title: What Can Misinformation Tell Us about Media Systems?
Susan Banducci is a professor and director of the Exeter Q-Step Centre. Her research interests are in the areas of comparative political behaviour, media and political communication.
Coen van de Ven (De Groene Amsterdammer, Amsterdam)
Talk title: Unravelling ‘New Conspiracism’ on Instagram
Coen van de Ven is a journalist at De Groene Amsterdammer, one of the larger quality newspapers in the Netherlands, where he wrote, among other things, about misinformation, fake news and alt right. He is furthermore a board member of the Dutch investigative journalism association.
Program outline
The program consists of 3 invited talks, 2 networking sessions and 70 contributed talks/papers, of which 10 talks will be plenary, and 60 talks will take in parallel sessions. Presentations should last no longer than 10-12 minutes, leaving 3-5 minutes for discussion. This page will be updated with relevant information on the online videoconferencing platform.
Interaction & networking. Conferences are usually not just to present work, but also to get feedback and meet new people. Therefore, apart from giving a talk, participants of MISDOOM meet for a networking session in so-called topical groups in the morning before their presentation.
