On Saturday 7 March, the Chair of UN Studies will host an event with Lions International as part of ‘The UN at 75’ events series running throughout 2020. This event focuses on SDG 4: Quality Education, asking how the UN’s image and visibility can be improved through education, and conversely, how education can foster a global mindset and UN values like multilateralism and peace.

Lions International
This event is in collaboration with Lions International. When the United Nations was established in 1945, the Lions were involved as an international NGO in drawing up the Charter. Since then there has been a special bond between the UN and Lions International; every year a special Lions UN day is organised in the important UN cities such as New York, Geneva, Nairobi, Rome, Vienna and also in The Hague.
Programme
To open this event, Elisabet Haderer, International Director of Lions Clubs International until 2019, reflects on the past and future of this special relationship between UN and Lions.
The second part of the event will focus on the questions: What can the UN do for education? and How can education foster the adoption of a global mindset and UN values such as multilateralism, humanitarianism, and peace?
We will first hold an interview panel with Dean of LUC Judi Mesman, Dutch UN Youth Delegate Hajar Yagkoubi, and Dutch UNESCO Youth Commission Representative Pepijn Kruiswijk. Chaired by Ria Schutte, the panel members will discuss questions in relation to their own work and it will provide ample opportunity for questions from both the panel members to each other and from the audience too. Following this, there will be a breakout session during which the audience will be divided into small groups to further discuss these questions amongst themselves. We will finish with a plenary during which we will draw conclusions from the day’s findings. We invite you to stay afterwards for a drinks reception.
