In this session, we will look at poetry excerpts from the vast corpus of Arabic literature that addresses nostalgia. Nostalgia includes the longing for a place, a loved one, a language, a memory, or one’s old self. We will see how poets writing in Arabic use nostalgia as a medium of reflection and a motivation for change and emancipation. Reading nostalgia in poetry is important as it highlights the role of poetry and the expression of emotions in documenting the past but also in constructing new personal, social, and political aspirations for the future.
