The aims, design and preliminary results of the first large-scale Citizen Science project in archaeology in the Netherlands

A year ago, Leiden University and Erfgoed Gelderland received a grant from the province of Gelderland to explore the potential of citizen science in Dutch archaeology. Citizen science allows for the investigation of enormous amounts of data, impossible to attain by professionals alone, but how reliable are the results? And is archaeology susceptible to this line of investigation? In the resulting project, Heritage Quest, citizen researchers examined LiDAR data of the Veluwe (The Netherlands) for archaeological objects. In only four months, the entire Veluwe was investigated! This presentation will discuss the aforementioned questions regarding citizen science in archaeology and the aims, design and preliminary results of the Heritage Quest project.
