Distinguishing dharmas and making maps: on the Abhidharma lists of dharmas
The Centre for Intercultural Philosophy is pleased to announce a talk by
Rupert Gethin
Abstract
An account of the world in terms of dharmas is for most practical intents and purposes the Indian Buddhist account of the world. This account comes down to us in a number of versions—principally Theravāda, Sarvāstivāda and Yogācāra—which, although broadly similar, differ in various details. With reference to the development of the lists of the different schools, this talk will consider the Abhidharma understanding of what a dharma is and how it was applied to lists of categories inherited from the earlier Nikāya-Āgama literature to draw up what were supposed to be definitive maps of reality.
All are welcome!
