Jan Waltmans speaking at commemorative ceremony in Tyre, Lebanon, 4 May 2019

LUCIS is very pleased to welcome the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Lebanon, mr. Jan Waltmans, to Leiden University, and to host a Q&A session with him on current Dutch-Lebanese relations.

During this session Jan Waltmans will examine and discuss the priorities in the relations between Lebanon and the Netherlands. Why is the Netherlands focusing on Lebanon, and what does that mean in practice? Which Dutch priorities are ranking in the top five of priorities in its collaboration with Lebanon?

These topics will be discussed while realizing that Lebanon has become home to one million Syrian refugees, is still challenged by the domestic strife of sectarian groups, and seems to have trouble to achieve its full potential. Our guest speaker will contrast the present state of affairs in Lebanon with the one he experienced during his previous posting in Baghdad.

This Q&A session will be introduced and moderated by Ronald E. Kon.
