- Wednesday 26 June 2019
- Book launch and opening of photo exhibition
- Cityhall ('Stadhuis')
One of the exhibitions that are being held in the context of the 11th International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 11) is Divine Encounters; Sacred Rituals and in Asia. This is an exhibition of photos by Dutch photograph and author Hans Kemp, who has made his home in Bangkok. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening on 26 June 2019.
The ‘hidden’ Asia
Divine Encounters is a photographic odyssey of the Asia that is hiding in plain sight, resilient and vibrant: just behind the neon signs, the marble and stainless-steel façades, the luxury cars and trendy shopping malls lurks another world. A world that reveals itself in elaborate spiritual rituals, blood-curdling ceremonies and exuberant festivals.
Exhibition and book
The exhibition is based on the four chapters of the photo book Divine Encounters; Sacred Rituals and Ceremonies and Asia. The book contains many more photos – accompanied by detailed explanations – of ceremonies and rituals in India, Japan, Indonesia, Mongolia, Korea, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
Photographer Hans Kemp has won various prizes. He has produced seven photo books, including the acclaimed Bikes of Burden, an homage to the motorbikes of Vietnam. With sales of over 100,000 in four languages, this book was a bestseller.
