On 17 April, 190 million voters will choose their president and their parliament in the biggest election that Indonesia, the world’s third largest democracy, has ever held. Against a backdrop of religious polarization, towering inequality, creeping illiberalism, money politics, and fake news, the battle between incumbent president Joko Widodo and his rival Prabowo Subianto is in full swing. What do they each stand for? Which sections of Indonesian society will benefit, or not, from the victory of either? Which groups and causes are represented by neither? How high are the stakes? What issues will decide the outcome? What are the latest trends and upsets? And who is likely to win?
