This masterclass is the second part of the “Patching Poetry’s Cloak: the Poet’s Historical Sense in Modern Arabic and Dutch Poetry” event. Following the poetry recital on Monday the 25th of March, the four poets will meet with students and discuss the theme of the event further.
The aim of the masterclass is to engage deeper with the notion of poetic influences from the past across poetry in Arabic and Dutch.
The masterclass will start with introductions by Esther op de Beek and Haneen Omari on the links between past and present in Dutch and Arabic poetry. Each poet will then present one of their poems alongside a poem by an earlier poet that they find inspiring. The two poems will be read in tandem, with the poet explaining lines of connection and departure between them.
Curriculum
Students will be asked to read the following in advance:
- T.S. Eliot’s “Tradition and the Individual Talent”
- Article on Arabic literature (tba. later)
- The poems (tba. later)
All readings will be sent via email upon registration.
