How do ideas, practices, norms, and material forms found in urban settings engage with (or omit at times), define and produce the ‘common good’, broadly conceived? Gathering speakers from North Africa and Europe, the conference aim is to discuss the histories, theories, methods and state of the art research on approaching 'the urban commons' from an interdisciplinary perspective. We are interested in examples from North Africa but also links with and dynamics between the region and its neighbours, as well as diasporic linkages and connections.

The main goal is to explore how ideas, discourses, and practices about collective living, ‘the good life’, morality, urban diversity, and the ‘commons’ are expressed in urban settings in the region, and ask how are 'the commons' defined, produced, and also used to exclude others
