Normally, Hittite anthropomorphic rock reliefs are associated with an inscription bearing the proper name of the depicted person and sometimes also his or her position. The main function of this inscription is to identify the figure attached to it. But its position – above the arm, in front of the figure or behind it – also plays a role in this identification. Both inscription itself and its position fulfil a symbolic function whose nature can be tracked in magical rituals. In the iconographic system formed by image and inscription the close relation between these two components allows to interpret the whole group as a syntactical structure in which each of them influence and complement the other. This talk aims at clarifying this symbolic relation established between the name and the figure in Hittite rock reliefs.
