John A. Hall is professor of Sociology at McGill University, and a renowned scholar on nationalism. Hall will talk about the ideas of nationalism researcher Ernest Gellner for our times. Gellner was among the first to insist on the nation state as the political form of modernity, to which he added that legitimacy depended upon the leaders of a state being co-cultural with its members. In the interest of social solidarity, nationalism (‘an ironic cultural nationalism’) needs to be present. Hall appraises Gellner’s ideas on nationalism as highly original, but out-of-date—in the light of current late capitalist inequality, the dangerous interaction of class with nation, and the new language of facts and alternative facts.
At this meeting Hall will present a paper entitled ‘Our current sense of anxiety, or after Gellner’, which will be circulated in advance.
Feel free to bring your own lunch.
