The Nuer

In this ethnographic film, made in 1970, Harris and Gardner introduce us to the life of a cattle-herding tribal community in the south-west of Ethiopia which belongs to the Nuer, an ethnic group which has featured recently in the news about the civil war raging in South Sudan during the last couple of years. The film, however, does not take place in a war setting but portrays the daily life of this community with its livestock, and the belief- and value system that accompanies it. It raises many interesting questions pertaining to, for instance, the interaction between the (filming) ethnographer and the people he/she is documenting, how a belief in gods and (ancestral) spirits is interwoven in daily social and economic life and the way in which the filmmakers try to represent this by using their camera.

You are all invited to attend this event, which will be held by Egbert Harmsen, who is working for the Visual Ethnography Program at the Cultural Anthropology Department of Leiden University.
