In our world of ever-increasing complexity and connectivity, people not only travel, but migrate to build a new life far away from their homeland. This lecture explores the long history of migration across the globe and asks how the global village in which we live came to be so diverse. It will show, on the basis of several concrete examples, that migration is not a new phenomenon. Groups like the Chinese community in The Hague, the Jewish community in Amsterdam, or the Syrian refugees in Utrecht, are all recent migrants that come from much longer traditions of migration. In fact, this lecture will argue that the historical patterns of migration are the key to understanding why our world is such a global world.
