This project applies new digital approaches to an old question: what was the status of French in medieval England? Over 800 manuscripts from medieval England contain French literature, and by analyzing this dataset in a quantitative way, this project aims to uncover language use patterns that have so far gone unnoticed. In this talk, we discuss the project’s methodology and preliminary findings while exploring some of the broader challenges and benefits of making pre-modern data machine-readable and FAIR-compliant.
