In this talk, I will look at some problems of the family tree of Iranian, and at some possible alternative approaches. I will argue that the traditional family tree is problematic not only because it was established at a time when many of the Iranian languages were not known yet, but also because the isoglosses on which it is based, and their selection, are highly problematic from a methodological point of view. In the last part, I will discuss how the comparatively recently discovered Bactrian material can contribute to a new approach.
