The Arabic novel originated in the nineteenth century, under the influence of a number of historical, cultural and political factors. Egypt played a vanguard role in this development. In this lecture, Djûke Poppinga will focus on the history and the origin of the novel. In doing so, she will concentrate mainly on Egypt.
About Djûke Poppinga
Djûke Poppinga studied Arabic Language and Literature in Amsterdam.
Since 1985, she is active as a literary translator from Arabic to Dutch. She currently works as a teacher of Arabic language and literature at the University of Amsterdam.
