What is the role of the state in economic development? In what ways do developing countries exercise policy agency amidst pressures to adopt neoliberal reforms? This roundtable brings together academic experts and practitioners to discuss their perspectives on how, why and under what conditions sectoral reforms and policy interventions in Asia, Africa and Latin America have worked or failed. The participants will talk about success and failures, and the role of politics in economic development. It will also provide an overview of the key findings of a recently completed research project on ‘Developmental States beyond East Asia’ .
