Anton Hemerijck is a Professor of Political Science and Sociology. In January 2017, he joined the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, taking a leave of absence from the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. His research interests concern social investment, the politics of inter-temporal policy choice, and political institutions and their socioeconomic impact. He recently edited the book The Uses of Social Investment (Oxford University Press, 2017) and is well-known for his monograph Changing Welfare States (OUP, 2013) and A Dutch Miracle written with Jelle Visser (Amsterdam University Press, 1997).
Prof. Hemerijck obtained his doctorate at Oxford University. He was director of the Netherlands’ Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) from 2003 to 2009, while working as Associate Professor at Leiden University and later holding a professorship in Comparative European Social Policy at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Prior to that, he was a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. In addition, he has held several other (visiting) appointments at, amongst others, MIT and LSE. Over the past decade he frequently served as an advisor on social policy and the welfare state for the European Commission.
In his lecture, Prof. Hemerijck will deal with the returns of Social Investment on wellbeing.
