We are pleased to announce the first symposium of the LIAS Canonical Cultures Research Network 2017-18.
This year’s symposium will focus on the study of inscriptions, a subject of prime importance to all engaged in the study of premodern Asia and the Middle East.
The symposium will have a keynote presentation by Prof. Richard Payne (University of Chicago): An Epigraphic State: The Early Iranian Court and Its Monumental Writings.
He will be joined by three Leiden-based researchers who will present aspects of their own work on, respectively, early Arabic, Indian, and Egyptian inscriptions:
Ahmad Al-Jallad - The Digital Frontier: North Arabian epigraphy in the 21st century
Csaba Dezső - Poetic Diction in Sanskrit Inscriptions: Royal Panegyrics from Early Mediaeval South and Southeast Asia
Jacques van der Vliet - Text and Space in the Epigraphy of Christian Egypt
