In 1986 the Mathematical Institute Leiden established an annual visiting professorship in mathematics, called the ‘Kloosterman Chair’, after Professor dr. Hendrik Douwe Kloosterman. This year’s Kloosterman Chair is awarded to prof. dr. Garth Dales, Lancaster University, who will be visiting Leiden University during October 2017
In this talk, which is aimed at a general audience, prof. dr. Garth Dales will discuss the automatic continuity of homomorphisms from algebras of continuous functions to other algebras. This turns out to be strongly related to fundamental issues in set theory. For an abstract of the lecture please visit this link.
