Ledi Bianku is Judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) since 1 February 2008. At the Court, he served as Chairman of the Working Group on the Reform of the Grand Chamber (since September 2016), Chairman of the Judicial Reflections Working Group (since June 2012) and as member of the EU law working group (since January 2009). He also held the position of Vice-President of Section I of the ECtHR (January 2016-February 2017). During 2006-2008 he was member of the Venice Commission For Democracy through Law. Prior to his appointment as Judge at the ECtHR, Judge Bianku lectured human rights, EU law and public international law at the Albanian School of Magistrates and the Faculty of Law of Tirana University (Albania). Besides his academic career, he served as legal advisor to the OSCE in Albania, as Chairman of the Albanian National Council for Radio and Television and in the period 2000-2007 as advisor ad personam to the President of the Republic, to the President of the Parliament and to Ministers of Justice and of European Affairs in Albania. The lecture is titled “ECHR and asylum” and will deal with the case-law of the ECHR on asylum cases, the impact it has had on asylum law in Europe, including the impact on migration crisis in Europe and on EU asylum policies. Judge Bianku studied law at the Faculty of Law of Tirana University, Faculty of Law of University of Trento and College of Europe in Bruges.
