Financial supervision is subject to many national and international developments. How does the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) deal with these developments? On Thursday 28 September Bas de Wit, Head of the AFM’s Legal Affairs Division, will give the fifteenth Hazelhoff Guest Lecture and will discuss this and other questions.
The AFM has the essential task to supervise the operation and conduct of the financial markets. National and international supervisors increasingly cooperate with one another and a large part of the legislation concerning financial supervision is the result of choices made at a European and global level. Moreover, the Dutch Minister of Finance recently announced that the Netherlands Act on financial supervision may be amended in the future to better align it with European developments and the characteristics of the financial sector. In addition to these changes in the way in which supervision is conducted, Dutch case law shows a more intensive judicial review and increased attention to judicial protection against supervisory decisions.
How are these developments affecting the AFM's supervision? And how does the AFM ensure that it can adequately respond to future legal developments in financial markets and financial regulation? This and other topics will be addressed by Bas de Wit.
Previous Hazelhoff Guest Lectures were given by Jan Kees de Jager, former Dutch Finance Minister, Rutger Schimmelpenninck and Ben Knüppe, liquidators in the bankruptcy of DSB Bank, Nout Wellink, former president of De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch central bank), Rutsel Martha, former Justice Minister of the Dutch Antilles, Don Scott De Amicis, former Vice President and General Counsel of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), Joanne Kellermann, board member Single Resolution Board, and Wim Mijs, Chief Executive of the European Banking Federation (EBF).
