The private sector, especially large renewable energy projects located in the remote and so far ‘useless’ areas of Africa may have a big role to play in (inclusive) development of the continent but have not yet been adequately studied. Dietz (2016) predicts that during the rest of this century, Africa will be divided into 'useful Africa' and 'useless Africa'. Warlordism and chaos would dominate the ‘useless Africa’ unless these areas suddenly become 'useful' as producers of green energy: hydro, solar or wind.
