Capital creation is the process of constructing monumental capital cities at a new location or through the transformation of a preexisting settlement. The aim of this talk is to discuss the phenomenon of capital creation in Assyria through an archaeological overview of its capitals: Aššur, Kār-Tukultī-Ninurta, Kalḫu, Dur-Šarrukēn and Nineveh.

This will be done by asking three questions:

  1. Why? The rationale for capital creation
  2. How? The process of capital construction
  3. Function? The urban and administrative function of a new capital.
