It is with great pleasure that we announce the second PCNI lunch seminar of 2017.

On Tuesday the 11th of April Dr. Bart van der Steen and his research group (Peter Burger, Charlotte van Rooden and Merel Snoep) will present their project Who are the squatters? Mapping and documenting squatting in Leiden.

The term squatting continues to evoke lively images of metropolitan punk youths who confront (riot) police in spectacular conflicts over occupied houses and buildings. In reality, however, the group of people who squatted was much more diverse. Squatting also happened in smaller places, squatters also included (working class) families, elderly women and alternative youths, and most squatter actions did not end with violence.

Using newspaper articles as a resource, our project reconstructs the history of squatting in Leiden as a means to challenge stereotypical images of squatting and in the Netherlands and beyond.

All PCNI staff members are welcome to lunch seminars. Participants who are not a member of the research group, should inform the organizers Anne Heyer and Diederik Smit in advance. It is a brown bag meeting, so feel free to bring your lunch.
