Reading Arabic Literature in a Global Context

Literary representations of desire, passion and madness reveal a web of conceptual categories that inhere who we are and how we know as well as inform our conduct in private and public. Gender, once considered, brings to the fore an added complication to our understanding of the role of desire, passion and madness in the formation of individual subject and communal identity and, above all, vision of the world grounded, as it were, in notions of self. The following workshops explore, through close readings of classical and modern Arabic literary texts, desire, passion and madness as sites of the interrogations of subject position and perspective vis-à-vis knowledge, power and conduct.

Masterclass 1: Passion and Subject

Huda Barakat (.b 1952) takes on the Arabic ‘love mad’ tradition in both Ahl al-hawa (1998) and Sayyidi wa habibi (2004) and deploys it to write about the Civil War in Lebanon (1975-1990) and at the same time turns the tradition on its head to interrogate familiar epistemology and ontology.Sayyidi wa habibi will be the focus of reading and discussion.
