For the eighth time, a team from Leiden University will be participating in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Vienna, Austria. The Moot Court is considered one of the most prestigious moot court competitions in the world. In most law schools, selection as a team member is in itself recognition of excellence. Check out the moot website at https://vismoot.pace.edu/ for more information.
The goal of the Vis Arbitral Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for the resolution of international business disputes through its application to a specific client problem, and to train tomorrow's law leaders in alternative methods of dispute resolution.
The team will consist of third and/or fourth-year students from the Leiden Law Faculty (native/near-native English-speaking exchange students are also most welcome) and LLM students, provided they have not yet been called to the bar. There are 8 to 10 places available in the team, which will be coached by Professor Marielle Koppenol-Laforce, partner at Houthoff Buruma, and her colleagues and ex-mooters. It is also a good opportunity to learn more about this leading Dutch law firm. The work will have to be done in the period from around 1 October 2016 to Easter 2017 (oral pleadings in Vienna) and consist of writing a statement of claim (due early December 2016), a statement of response (due mid January 2017) and pleadings in English. In preparation of the last task, pre-moots will be held in February/March 2017 at the Peace Palace, The Hague, in Dutch law firms and abroad (on a voluntary basis). Usually there is even the possibility to follow a pre-moot preparation in September in Stockholm. How the team chooses to gain experience will also depend on the budget it can obtain from sponsors and by other means. The trip to Vienna (the week before Easter 2017) will involve not only hard work but also drinks, visits to foreign law firms and the opportunity to meet members of the other 250 teams from all over the world. It's a truly unforgettable experience!
