Leiden University's 2016-2017 Academic Year will start on 5 September 2016 in the Pieterskerk in Leiden.

In line with tradition, the ceremony will be opened by the procession of students and professors, followed by the opening speech by Professor Carel Stolker, Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board.

Programme

Lesage Munyemana, a student of Biology, will talk about his experience with the Dutch education system and about Meeting Point, a platform that he set up to support refugee students.

Celine van Es, master's student of Civil Law and a student in the Leiden Leadership Programme 2015-2016, will introduce the project on Online higher education for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

This will be followed by a musical interlude provided by the madrigal choir of student music society Sempre Crescendo, under the direction of Tristan Knelange.

The ceremony will conclude with the presentation of the Leiden Teaching Prize for the most talented lecturer, and the Mr K.J. Cath Prize for the person who has been judged the best ambassador for Leiden University.

Please be seated before 14.55 hrs. The programme will start at 15.00 hrs. precisely. After the ceremony, at around 16.30 hrs., there will be a reception in the Pieterskerk.

The ceremony will be translated simultaneously into English and can be followed by streaming video.
