Defining Central Europe by its geographic borders is difficult. Perhaps Central Europe ‘is’ a set of shared memories? A jig-saw puzzle of lieux de memoire (Nora), ‘traumatic places’ (Assmann), and ‘non-places of transit’ (Augé)? Or should we regard Central Europe as Un-Ort (‘un-place’): an uncanny place of a memory still suppressed but just about to surface.
Christoph Leitgeb (Austrian Academy of Sciences) explores the potentials and pitfalls of typological identification of place and memory.
