A Unique Program on Persian Traditional Sport, Music and Persian Poetry
On Friday 22 January a group of Iranian Zurkhaneh athletes will give a performance at Leiden University, Lipsius Building 019, at 19.00.
This program offers a unique performance of the traditional Persian gymnasium called zurkhaneh (lit. ‘house of strength’). Although zurkhaneh is associated with wrestling, it is certainly more than that, as wrestling is only one part of a series of exercises. The zurkhaneh athletes combine classical Persian poetry and music with their a varied range of exercises to train their bodies, minds and souls. It is one of cultural heritages of Iran safeguarded by the UNESCO.
