Leiden-Brazil Summer School on Data Science in Health and Disease

This online summer course will stimulate international collaborations between students from Brazil and Leiden. The course will provide an introduction to the use of big data analysis in health and disease. The programme, including theory and practical modules, will focus on diverse hospital data, “omics data” and application thereof in prediction, prognosis and understanding of disease. Students will have the opportunity to interact with each other in culturally diverse groups.

Brazil - Leiden cooperation on data science in health and disease

Leiden University Medical Center and Leiden University have a long history of collaboration with several research institutions and universities in Brazil. The Biomedical Data Sciences Department at LUMC collaborates with Albert Einstein and USP on big data and ageing related research. The Infectious Disease Department at LUMC joins forces with Fiocruz and PUCPR in various research projects on infectious diseases while the Biology Institute and the Computer Science Institute of the Science Faculty (Leiden University) collaborate with UFRJ, USP, PUCGO and FioCruz.

Course information

The programme addresses 3 distinct but linked research topics (Big Data, Infections diseases and Data Sciences) and it is divided into 2 weeks: – first week includes lectures by experts in the field s of Big data, Omics and data visualization, from both Brazilian and Leiden academia, - second week you will apply the knowledge into practice during interactive assessment. All courses are taught in English by researchers from University of São Paulo., Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Albert Einstein Hospital, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR), Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, LUMC and Leiden University researchers, exposing participants not only to a broad view on data science in health but also to different teaching methods.

Target audience

The summer school is aimed at students who have completed at least a BA in a relevant field, masters students and entry level PhD’s.

Class size & Study load

A maximum of 50 participants will be admitted to this summer school. Classes are limited in size in order to facilitate interaction between researchers/professors and students. Classes take place on weekdays between 15.00 and 18.00 CET.
