Statistical Science (specialisation) (MSc)
Why Leiden University?
Statistical science is highly multidisciplinary. Within the programme we offer you a unique combination of knowledge and expertise through close collaboration.
Statistical science for the life sciences
Statistics for the life sciences is almost synonymous with biostatistics. It incorporates quantitative modeling and methods of data analysis for clinical and epidemiological research (e.g. survival analysis) that in the past twenty years have become indispensable in medical research. It also includes statistical methods used in genetic research and genomics, which have a classical foundation, but are rapidly developing in answer to present-day opportunities provided by data from new experimental platforms, such as micro-arrays and whole-genome scans.
Statistical science for the behavioural sciences
It is no exaggeration to say that all empirical research in the present day social and behavioural sciences relies predominantly on statistical analysis. There is a long-standing statistical tradition in educational and psychological testing (psychometrics), and also in survey research, marketing research and quantitative demographics (sociometric), but extends into many new domains such as the quantitative study of taste and smell (sensometrics). Special attention must be given to application in cognitive science (fMRI data) and forensic statistics (DNA data).
Close collaboration with top institutes and universities
The master’s programme Statistical Science for the Life Sciences and Behavioural Sciences is organised jointly by groups at different institutes and universities:
- Mathematical Institute, Leiden University
- Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Leiden University
- Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, Leiden University Medical Center
- Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, VU Medical Center
- Biometris – Applied Statistics, Wageningen University and Research centre
Together these institutes have expertise in a wide area of statistical science and its applications, both practical and theoretical. Many of the scientific staff members are involved in other educational tasks, or are specialised in research and statistical consultation. All lectures and meetings take place in Leiden, but you may visit the other research institutes for extended periods of time for research projects.
Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science is a first-class research faculty with an excellent position in the basic disciplines of science. The current research and education programmes span the entire spectrum of science ranging from Mathematics and Statistical Science, Computer Science and Data Science, Astrophysics, Physics, Chemistry and Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences to Biology and Environmental Sciences. Our science community is driven by their curiosity and desire to increase basic knowledge, for science and to contribute to the great societal challenges of today and tomorrow. Core values are scientific impact, technological innovation and relevance to society.
