Admission requirements

To be eligible for Data Science: Statistical Science at Leiden University, you must meet the following admission requirements.

Diploma requirements

Students from a variety of backgrounds may be admitted. An indication of the desired background is given by the following:

  1. Basic knowledge of calculus (for the Netherlands: VWO Wiskunde B)
  2. Bachelor degree from a research university (for the Netherlands: a HBO-degree alone is insufficient)
  3. At least 20 EC in the bachelor degree program concern statistics/advanced methodology and/or (higher) mathematics
  4. These courses have been concluded with an average mark of at least 7.5/10 (or GPA ≥ 3.4)
  5. Proficiency in English (see below).

Students fulfilling these requirements will be admitted conditionally on motivation. Students may compensate for one or more requirements, as judged by the Board of Admissions.

Students with a bachelor degree in mathematics, psychology, computer science, or econometrics from a university in the Netherlands will typically fulfil requirements 2, 3, 5.

Please note: additional requirements may apply on prior knowledge regarding statistics, mathematics and computer programming if students want to start with the programme in February.  

Language requirements

Proof of sufficient proficiency in English, evidenced by appropriate language test:

  • IELTS: minimum 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 for each of the components Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
  • TOEFL: internet based 90
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), minimum grade C

Please note: You do not have to submit proof of proficiency if you have completed your education in Canada (except French-taught programmes in Canada), USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or when you hold an International Baccalaureate, or for Dutch students, if you have completed VWO level English or an English taught bachelor at a Dutch Research University.
