Research in Chemistry (MSc)

About the programme

The Research in Chemistry programme consists of 120 European Credit Transfer System points (EC) and includes a research training project of 60 EC.

Programme overview

The curriculum of the Research in Chemistry programme consists of:

  • Research training project(s) (60 EC)
  • Academic Writing (2 EC) and Science Methodology (4 EC)
  • Core courses (24 EC)
  • Elective courses (24 EC)
  • Specialisation-specific components (6 EC)

The research training project can be split into two projects: one major (at least 40 EC) and one minor (at least 20 EC). The research project includes a presentation and a written report - the master’s thesis - and is carried out in a research group in one of the two major research areas:

  • Chemical Biology
  • Energy & Sustainability

You can conduct the minor research training project in a research group at the LIC, at another institute within the Faculty of Science, at another university or in a company. This can also be done abroad.

Study guidance

At the start of the programme you will choose a personal mentor in a research group related to the selected research area. The mentor will be your personal coach during the complete master's programme. You will also use a digital Master planner to schedule your studies. The schedule will be monitored by your mentor and the study coordinator. During your master programme you will become a member of one of the research groups at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC) and receive the necessary guidance.
