IncLUsion

Are you a refugee with an academic background and have you recently arrived in The Netherlands? Would you like to get to know Leiden University? You’re in the right place. The IncLUsion initiative makes it possible for refugees who are not (yet) able to register as students to follow courses at Leiden University. In addition, there is a team of buddies ready to help out with both the practical and social aspect of your studies.

What does IncLUsion offer?

Individual courses

As an IncLUsion student, you can follow a maximum of two undergraduate courses per semester. Courses are available at the following faculties:

  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Leiden Law School
  • Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs

These are individual, one-semester courses taught in English. Although these are degree courses, you will not earn study credits for them. Instead, upon successful completion, you will be awarded a certificate of participation. Courses are free of charge.

In your application you will be asked to describe your academic background and the area of study you are interested in. The IncLUsion team will then do its best to offer you suitable courses.

Buddy system

Studying is more than just attending classes, which is why IncLUsion works with a buddy system. Buddies are Leiden University students who will help you to integrate at the university by answering your questions and accompanying you to social activities.

Who can join?

The IncLUsion programme is intended for refugees who are unable to register on regular study programmes. Priority is given to applicants who have not yet been granted a Dutch residence permit. You must have previously followed university-level education and have a good command of English.

How to apply?

Applications are currently closed. You can apply online via this page once applications re-open. Applications open each year in May and October for the upcoming semester.

After applying

IncLUsion receives a large number of applications each semester, which means we have to make a selection. Selection is based on your abilities and where you live. If you meet all criteria, you will be invited for an interview with the IncLUsion team and course coordinators. They will decide whether your academic background and English are sufficient for you to successfully follow courses. Once you have been admitted, you will be invited to indicate which of the available courses you would prefer to follow.
