University Sports Centre
The University Sports Centre (USC) offers more than 50 types of sport and group lessons, including not only ‘old school’ sports like judo, boxing and tennis, but also more modern ones like ultimate Frisbee, Zumba and Riverdance. All group lessons are held in the main USC building on Einsteinweg. There is a gym in two locations: at PlexFit in the centre of Leiden and on Einsteinweg. To participate in USC sports you will need a sports card. Students and staff of Leiden University and Leiden University of Applied Sciences and businesses can apply for one. We charge an extra fee for some courses.
Each year musicians-round-the-organ concerts are held in the Large Auditorium of the Academy Building. These are free of charge and open to all visitors. The organ in the Large Auditorium has a long history. The first instrument was installed in the Academy Building in 1675, but was removed again in 1829. The second organ was presented to the University by students and alumni in 1935, the 400th anniversary of the birth of William of Orange.

Route of discoveries
Learn about the great discoveries made in Leiden. September 2015 saw the launch of Leiden Discoveries, an app that takes you on a tour past the important academic discoveries made by great scholars in Leiden. Signs along the route provide a brief description of the discovery. Tulips, superconductivity, the constitution, radio astronomy: all discoveries and inventions that were ‘made in Leiden’. Where and by whom? Find out with the app.
