On 26 January 2022 Leiden University’s Grotius Centre will host the official online launch of the Leiden Overview on SOGIESC in International Law. The two authors of this this new online resource, Waruguru Gaitho & Kees Waaldijk, will then present the Leiden Overview to Flávia Piovesan and Gurchaten Sandhu (see below). All four of them will speak during this online launch event. The talks will be followed by an opportunity for Questions & Answers.
The Leiden Overview provides weblinks to a selection of (introductory) materials. These include online texts and video recordings about sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex issues in international human rights law, in international refugee law, in international criminal law, and in other areas of international law. The list covers materials from or about bodies of the United Nations, and from or about the African, Asian, European and Inter-American human rights systems. It also links to overviews of state practice in the countries of the world. The Leiden Overview aims to be an educational tool for many contexts around the world. It offers a good preparation for future participants in the Summer School on SOGI in International Law.
The speakers at the launch:
Flávia Piovesan is a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and has been the Commission’s Rapporteur on the Rights of LGBTI Persons since 2018; professor Flávia Piovesan teaches Constitutional Law and Humans Rights at the Catholic University of São Paulo.
Gurchaten Sandhu (Nanoo) is the President of UN-GLOBE (the organization advocating for the equality of LGBTIQ+ personnel and dependents in the UN system), and works at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on non-discrimination focusing on the grounds of SOGIESC, race and religion; Nanoo is alumnus of the Summer School on SOGI in International Law.
Waruguru Gaitho is a human rights lawyer focusing on the intersection of SOGIESC, race and gender, and works as a lecturer at Leiden University’s Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society; Gaitho is alumnus of, and speaker at the Summer School on SOGI in International Law.
Kees Waaldijk is professor of comparative sexual orientation law at Leiden University’s Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, where in 2016 he started the Summer School on SOGI in International Law; Kees is speaker at, and academic coordinator of this Summer School.
Organizational and technical support for this online launch event (and for the Summer School on SOGI in International Law) is provided by Loran Hempenius, student at Leiden Law School and assistant to professor Kees Waaldijk; Loran can be contacted at SOGI@law.leidenuniv.nl.
