1325 twenty years on: The evolution of the WPS agenda after 9/11

Saturday 31 October 2020 marks the 20th anniversary since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325) which globally launched the women peace and security (WPS) agenda across multiple security platforms. In the succeeding years, terrorism, violent extremism and the nature and intensity of international conflict has continued to impact women. At the same time, women have increasingly emerged as important actors within and beyond the WPS agenda, including as members of violent extremist groups.
In this webinar, our distinguished panel will assess how UNSCR 1325 has adapted and can continue to evolve to address the challenges of international peace and security. A panel of leading experts and practitioners from around the world will address this issue and a number of leading questions including:
- How have terrorism and violent extremism impacted the WPS agenda?
- In turn, how has the WPS agenda influenced counterterrorism and the CVE?
- How have the UN Security Council or individual member states advanced or restricted the WPS agenda within the UN?
- What should be the key aims of the WPS agenda going forward
The webinar is hosted jointly by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT), Women in International Security Netherlands (WIIS_NL), the Chair of UN Studies in Peace and Justice, and the Institute for Security and Global Affairs at Leiden University. It will host a distinguished panel of speakers, who will provide a broad spectrum of views on this topic from their varied perspectives: legal, military, humanitarian, and diplomatic.
This will be a public, recorded event, and all are welcome to (virtually) attend.
