Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of every October to recognize the achievements of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Within the Snellius building together with LIACS and MI, we celebrate Ada Lovelace Day yearly as well. We make use of this special occasion to welcome our newest female students and staff in LIACS and MI.

This year, the event will take place online. We are happy to have Mitra Baratchi (Assistant Professor from LIACS) and Francesca Arici (Assistant Professor from MI) joining us. They will tell a story about themselves, what brought them here and how they overcame all the obstacles in pursuing their career.

We hope these heart-to-heart talks would encourage and inspire the newly coming young girls who are interested in the STEM fields.

About the speakers

Mitra Baratchi’s research is focused on spatio-temporal data mining and mobility modelling. More specifically, she is interested in designing algorithms that extract patterns from the trajectories of moving objects such as cars, people, and animals. Such research is targeting applications in crowd monitoring, smart mobility, and urban planning.

Francesca Arici's research interests are in the field of noncommutative geometry and its interplay with theoretical physics. In particular, she is interested in index theory and its applications to operator algebras, in particular Cuntz--Pimsner algebras, graph C*-algebras and their K-theory.

Programme outline

14:00-14:05 Opening: Aske Plaat (Scientific director of LIACS / professor of Data science)
14:05-14:25 Speaker from MI: Francesca Arici (Assistant Professor in mathematics)
14:25-14:45 Speaker from LIACS: Mitra Baratchi (Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence)

Audience

Although we put girls under the spotlight in this event, all students and staff, who care about diversity and equity or who are just curious about the stories of the speakers, are welcome to join.
