Do you want to improve your Public Speaking skills? Then this is your chance!

The LeidenMUN team is excited to invite you to join the workshop 'Introduction to Public Speaking'.

The workshop is in English.

About the workshop

Since our establishment in 2005, we have been training students in public speaking, debate and negotiation in preparation for the most competitive international Model UN conferences; including those at Oxford and Harvard.

The fear of public speaking is a sensation shared by millions of people around the world; one study even notes that this number could be as high as 77% of the world’s population. Despite that fact, we are proud to share that a vast majority of students that work with us throughout our preparatory track have had little to no public speaking experience in the past.
With this workshop, we aim to show you the very first step towards the direction of discovering your voice. Beyond that, you will have the chance to access unique insights into the world of Model United Nations (MUN) as presented by one of the highest ranked delegations in Europe.

If you enjoy your time with us, you can speak to one of our Board Members to find out more about joining our delegation. Every year, LeidenMUN hosts three, 10-12 week training programmes for the most prestigious international MUN conferences, such as those at Harvard, Oxford, King’s College and Science Po. Being part of a LeidenMUN delegation is a highly challenging, yet rewarding experience. Most importantly, you will make friends that could very well last a lifetime.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 29 September. Please register via this link.

Meet your Delegate Trainers

Avalon M. Leiman

When I first stumbled upon LeidenMUN I was a shy, first-year at Leiden University College who was struggling to find her voice. After twelve weeks of participating in the rigorous Harvard National Model United Nations Preparatory Track and conference in 2020, I had blossomed into a different person altogether. Not only am I no longer preoccupied with a lack of confidence when speaking in front of crowds of a hundred people or more, but in fact I sincerely enjoy doing so and crave more. The skills I acquired and the developments I made - both on an academic and a personal level - are all thanks to the multilateral teaching methods unique to LeidenMUN. Having reaped so much from HNMUN and its Preparatory Track, I knew that I wanted to give back to the Foundation and what better way to do so than becoming a Delegate Trainer for the 2020/21 Academic Year.

I am passionate about the craft of eloquent argumentation and artful public speaking, and I look forward to introducing you to such skills at these workshops in September.

Learning how to become the authority over my own voice has been a journey that I have been pursuing ever since joining the LeidenMUN Foundation in 2018. It all began with a stage, a  microphone, a crowd of dozens, and 90 seconds to sway the room. Throughout my time as a delegate, my talent for public speaking was brought out, and it culminated during a debate at the annual Harvard National MUN conference of 2019. After a particularly challenging committee in Maastricht, I set my vision on assisting others on their journey towards becoming better public speakers, and so I became a Delegate Trainer for the Leiden MUN Foundation. The process of improvement begins with recognizing one's fear of public speaking, embracing the anxiety that such fear entails and then finally discovering a voice of passion which everyone has buried within. With this workshop, I hope to show you that very first step in a process that could very well reveal a side of yourself that you are yet to discover.
