First lecture
Title
Conquering the fortress: new strategies for the treatment of tuberculosis
Speaker
Monica is a Veni laureate in the group of Prof. Annemarie Meijer at the IBL. She is interested in host-pathogen interactions and in studying how pathogens manipulate inflammatory and cell death-related pathways within host cells.
Abstract
Tuberculosis is a major public health issue. The bacteria causing tuberculosis live and hide inside granulomas, a fortress. Antibiotics have difficulties to reach and kill the pathogen when living inside granulomas, resulting in an increased appearance of drug-resistant bacteria. Alternative therapies for tuberculosis are therefore desperately needed.
Therapies directed at the host (host-directed therapy) instead of the pathogen provide such an alternative. For instance, by disrupting cellular pathways of crucial importance for the course of the infection.
In this talk, I will present some of the results obtained in the last years that have led to an NWO Veni grant for exploring new host-directed strategies for the treatment of tuberculosis.
