Samenvatting
Due to the rapid growth of nanotechnology, there is an increased concern about the potential impacts of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on the environment. In this thesis, the metabolic potential, composition and functional profile of soil microbial communities were found to be dependent on the ENPs physico-chemical properties, exposure dynamics and dosing regimens. The shape of ENPs played a significant role in affecting the metabolic potential of microbial communities, with nano-plates being more toxic than nano-spheres and polygonal-shaped ENPs. The physico-chemical properties of ENPs could change the fate of ENPs, and the exposure dynamics were proposed to be taken into consideration in assessing ENPs toxicity. Alterations in microbial community composition depended on ENPs exposure time and concentration. However, genus specific changes occurred but not yet necessarily reflected biological significance in community functioning. Functional redundancy might contribute to community tolerance to ENPs exposure. The realistic ENPs exposure scenarios with multiple dosing frequencies instead of one-time pulse injection induced a tendency towards larger alteration of both community composition and functioning. These findings highlighted the importance of evaluating both exposure and effects of ENPs under natural conditions, and provided further insights in understanding the impact of NPs on microbial communities towards environmentally relevant assessment.
