Samenvatting
In the last several decades our understanding of cosmology has evolved enormously. We now have a phenomenologically self-consistent model, known as the Cosmological Standard Model, which is able to successfully fit the huge amount of observational data with only a few free parameters. While this success is truly astonishing, one should keep in mind that there are a few theoretical puzzles in the Cosmological Standard Model, one of the striking examples of which is the present-day cosmic acceleration. The theme of this PhD research was the study of alternatives to the Cosmological Standard Model in the context of late-universe accelerated expansion. It is very exciting that the near-future cosmological observations are expected to test the Cosmological Standard Model and its alternatives with amazing accuracy. The last fact makes this research especially timely and interesting.
