Since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the post-war consensus, the challenges of neoliberal capitalism, globalisation and ethnic nationalism have led to growing political divisions in societies, including the emergence of far right, far left and radical Islamist violent extremism. Abbas explores the nature of how these forces have been affected by the rise of populism and authoritarianism and the decline of the discourses of diversity and multiculturalism in societies in the Global North, with a particular focus on the UK.
He explores how the forces of Islamophobia and radicalisation have become mutually reinforcing discourses that perpetuate the nationalistic tendencies of governments unable to come to terms with pluralism. The privileging of whiteness and the racialisation of all other differences in society has led to immense political, cultural, social and economic divisions that have become entrenched. This lecture is based on Abbas’ new book, out in August 2019, which reflect on the ‘war on terror’ culture that has permeated aspects of media, politics, civil society and the cultural realm. Political shocks such as Brexit and Trump are both symptoms and cause of this malaise, which results in further enhancing the waves of localised radicalisation and Islamophobia that feed off each other in this vicious cycle of hate and counter hate.
