Life cycle assessment (LCA) of nanowire-based solar cells
Georgios Pallas (CML) is a PhD candidate at the CML. His research interest is to develop methods to guide the sustainable development of emerging technologies to prevent unintentional future environmental impacts of the new technologies. He focuses on (prospective) life cycle assessment of nanomaterials for the next generation photovoltaic technologies.
Nanomaterials are expected to play an important role in the development of greener and more sustainable products. Nanomaterial use in solar cells can increase their conversion efficiency. However, challenges regarding potential environmental and human health impacts need to be considered. In this talk I will discuss how life cycle assessment (LCA) can be used as a tool to address these challenges. I will present the key findings of LCA of the emerging nanowire-based solar cells and the usefulness of LCA as a tool to guide the sustainable development of new technologies.
Second and last Lecture before the start of the summer season
Looking inside out and outside in
Eric Eliel (LION) is professor of Quantum Optics at LION and until recently he was the Scientific Director of the institute.
In this short presentation Eric Eliel, former Scientific Director of LION, will reflect on the (im)possibility of leadership in the loosely structured environment of Leiden University. He will also share about the tricks of the trade: hard work, compassion, a smile and cookies.
This Week's Discoveries will resume on 25 September 2018. Have a nice holiday/conference season and we hope to see you back in September.
